Purchase of the WAC Turned Down By the Woodlands Recreation Center Board of Directors
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a letter dated July 26, Don Norrell, General Manger
of the Community Association of the Woodlands,
advised the GMVA that they would not pursue the
option of purchasing the WAC at this time. The letter
did not give any reasons for their decision and we
have asked them to explain why they made this
decision.
We hope they will respond at our meeting on August
21.
At the GMVA meeting on August 21 we will be
discussing other alternatives to keep the WAC open
such as working with the YMCA, Bally’s and other
groups at the WAC such as the dive team.
Woodlands Governance –should we be a city or a special purpose district?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Woodlands governance process is coming to a
critical stage. It is important that residents become
involved and make their opinions known to the
leaders of the community and how they want them
to proceed. To assist you we will be having a wide
ranging discussion of the two options now being
considered by the Governance Committee. We will be
discussing how and why these alternatives were
chosen, who the players in the game are and what
you can do to make sure that you end up with what
you want in your future. Gail Carney, one the Village
Associations representatives to the GSC, has been
asked to attend and discuss the alternatives.

Traffic on Maple Branch – continuing to look for a solution
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The GMVA has sent a letter to all branches of local
law enforcement and the precinct commissioner
asking them to “think outside the box” in finding
solutions. Resident Jim Upham and GM board member
Franklin Palmer have found interesting information on
what other communities are doing and have
forwarded it the interested parties. If you’re
interested in finding out more about what can be
done visit our Web site and find out about ‘speed
humps’.
Glen Mill Sound Wall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At their meeting on August 9th, the WCA agreed to continue to
move forward in pressing TxDOT to accept a noise absorptive
noise wall. The President of the Sound Fighters, the wall's
manufacturers, made a presentation at the WCA meeting. When
the Community Association receives approval for the wall,
the GMVA will do a survey of the residents on Deerfoot Circle
to let them know what is happening and their reaction to
the proposed wall. Information on this type of wall can
be found at htt

The Friendship Center Needs Meals-on-Wheels Volunteers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Friendship Center currently delivers between 280
and 325 hot meals Monday through Friday with the
capacity of producing up to 360 meals daily. Each
day's production is directly related to the number of
volunteeers available for deliveries.
They are in critical need for drivers for regular routes
througout Montgomery County. The commitment is
as little as 90 minutes per week. Individual volunteer
drivers are the backbone of the operation.
Please call Susan Bond, 281-292-6353, or email her
at sbond@thefriendshipcenter.com to sign up or
inquire further.
Meet Manny Bekiri of Brothers Pizza
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The best pizza any where near here is at Brother's Pizzeria
in the GM shopping center. Brother's has six stores
including one in Sterling Ridge. The GM store is operated
by Manny Bekiri (pictured here) who lives in Imperial Oaks,
is married and has three daughters.
Brother's was founded by Manny's uncle Jimmy, who
came to Houston in 1980 from Brooklyn, where he
had been in the restaurant business. Over time the
brothers and their families came to Houston and went
into the restaurant business.
Brother's is a custom pizza shop with each pie made
to order, they also do calzones, sandwiches and
salads. They are one of the few stores where
you can also buy wine and beer. Manny is going to
remodel the interior of the store and is thinking of
expanding the use of the terrace just outside.
