Farmer's
Market Presentation to the WCA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The GMVA is making a presentation to the Woodlands Community
Association
Board on Wednesday, August 13th requesting financial support
to help sustain and grow the Farmer's Market for our community.
We welcome your support in this effort and invite you to either
send us your testimonials regarding your experiences with the
local Farmer's Market or come to the meeting on the 13th
and sign-up to give a brief statement to this effect.
The WCA meeting begins at 7 PM that evening and takes place
in the large board room at the Community Associations Building
at
2201 Lake Woodlands Drive.
The Grogan's Mill Village Association thanks all of
the loyal supporters of our first Grogan's Mill Farmer's
Market that just concluded the Spring season.
We will be returning in the Fall, in our same location,
starting on Saturday, October 4th and running for the next
10 weeks, ending on Saturday, December 6th. Hours will
remain 8 AM to 12 Noon.
Again, we appreciate all of you coming out to our
initial Farmer's Market and look forward to seeing
you again in the Fall.
August
Yard of the Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Homer and Cheryl Dunn have lived in their home in Grogan's
Mill for the past eight years. Cheryl reports that Homer deserves
all of the credit for their yard. He spends many hours
gardening and is creative with spot watering. He uses soaker
hoses and containers to insure deep water to plants that need
it while not watering the yard as a whole.
He chooses plants with an eye to color throughout the year.
He, also, incorporates an herb garden in the front yard to
provide fresh herbs for cooking during the spring and summer
months. This year his herb garden included Basil, Silver Lemon
Thyme, Dill, Texas Tarragon, Pineapple Sage, Italian and Greek
Oregano, Rosemary and Lemon Balm.
August is a challenging month for the yard and time is
spent keeping things alive as well as preparing beds
for fall plants. Homer is proud of this work, but states that
he is fortunate to live in an area where many people take
pride in their yards and work very hard to make the neighborhood
look lovely all year long. He enjoys sharing plants and information
with neighbors.
The August 2008 GMVA Yard Of The Month was selected by Donna
Gossett.

Is
Your Cul-de-sac an Orphan?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Grogan's Mill we have over 200 cul-de-sacs. A few of
them are known as super cul-de-sacs, which are generally
found at the entrance to subdivisions and are maintained by
the Community Association from your assessment dollars. The
vast majority, such as those found at the end of streets, have
been deeded to the county as part of the right-of-way, and are
not maintained unless it is by the home owners on the street.
While some of these cul-de-sacs are well maintained most
are neglected and do nothing to improve home values - these
are the ORPHANS.
The Grogan's Mill Village Association is asking residents
to take action and get involved in long-term cul-de-sacs maintenance
programs. The association is establishing a Cul-de-sacs Revitalization contest
which will start this year and culminate in 2009. A prize will
be awarded to the winning cul-de-sacs. In the near future
an application and guidelines for the contest will be posted
on the GMVA website: www.grogansmillvillage.com.
If you have any ideas for this project please submit them by
email to: suggestions@gmva.org or
submit them by mail to GMVA, PO Box 7522, The Woodlands,
TX 77387-7522.
Report
Infrastructure Problems
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The GMVA
would like to compile a list of infrastructure problems in Grogan's
Mill.
We need your eyes and ears to help us, though. If you
see something broken in your neighborhood, such as a broken
curb, broken sign, broken mailbox, etc., please contact any
Board
member or write to us at suggestions@gmva.org.
You will be helping out your entire village with just a few
sentences.
Chris
Nunes to Speak at August GMVA Meeting

will attend the August 18th GMVA meeting at 6:30PM to
report on what actions are being taken at Sawmill Park.

Environmental Services-- West Nile + mosquito pool confirmed
The Texas Department of State Health Services recently reported
the first positive pool of West Nile MOSQUITOES (+WNv) in
The Woodlands for 2008. The sample was collected during the
week of July 14 surveillance. Over 250 sites in the community
have already been monitored this season. We remind
residents West Nile virus is endemic to our area. If you must
be outside during the dusk to dawn hours when the disease-carrying
Culex quinquefasciatus is active, remember to wear long, loose,
light clothing and apply repellent.
See www.thewoodlandsassociations.org and click
Environmental Services then Mosquito Information for more
recommendations, or call Environmental Services at 281.210.3900.

Recommendation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We at the GMVA would like to provide information that may be
useful to our residents. Bruce Cunningham had a great
experience at a local acupunturist. If you have something
great to say about a Grogan's Mill business, please
let us know so we can share with other residents.
My arm has not been fully functional since I had a biking accident
a couple of years ago. I could not reach to get a glass
out of the cupboard. My MD said it was a damaged nerve and there
was nothing he could do about it. Recently, after some
exercise it got significantly worse. My Pilates instructor,
seeing my plight, asked if I had ever tried acupuncture. In
my more than 70 years I had not, I thought it sounded kind of unbelievable.
My instructor is very professional and understands the
muscle and bone structure of the body. I decided to give it
a try. It worked beyond my expectations, after one treatment
I was able to use my arm, after three it is back to normal. It
is great to be mobile again.
